SPRING BREAK - APRIL 3-10, 2020 - Students return April 13

Message from Principal Jackson
Did you know Fall Creek Elementary has an EQUITY TEAM to include two equity coaches who work with administration, students and staff to provide an equitable environment for all.  Equity coaches of HSE Schools demonstrate a commitment to all children and families through the promotion of equity, social justice, anti-bias pedagogy, and inclusionary practices.  At FCE, we have recently added additional languages to signage designating the main areas of our school.  We have recently connected students with a partnership with Fall Creek Junior High's Junior Black Student Union.  They are proving to be fabulous mentors for our students.

Grief Sensitive School
FCE has been designated a "Grief-Sensitive School" by the New York Life Foundation, receiving a $500 Grief-Sensitive Schools Initiative grant to help create a bereavement support plan and encourage ongoing staff development in order to better support its grieving students.  The Grief-Sensitive Schools Initiative- a pioneering effort that utilizes New York Life's workforce to help equip local schools to care for the grieving students in their midst -is an extension of the work of the Coalition to Support Grieving Students, a collaboration among leading k-12 professional organizations to develop and deliver best-in-class grief support resources to educators.

Safe Schools
At FCE, we continue to practice monthly fire drills, severe weather drills, and mad-made drills.  We recently had a drill this week practicing what it looks like when we "Shelter in Place".  The students did a great job!

HSE Foundation Grants Awarded
FCE has recently received two different grants.  Mrs. Abraham received a grant she titled “Mindful Music” to use with her students in music class and Mrs. Robinson’s and Mrs. Farrell’s students wrote a student-led grant about “See A Need, Plant a Seed” to further our nature trail in the back of the school.
Kindergarten teachers are in the process of writing a garden tower grant sponsored by the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District.  Amazing things are happening at FCE!

Did you know we have dogs visit with select students in the office area once a week?  Our LOAL (Love on a Leash) and Puppies and Pals (all students) partnership continues to be a great benefit to kids struggling with anxiety, reading, and social relationships/connections.

Ritchie Woods / Conner Prairie
1st grade Richey Woods and 4th grade Conner Prairie partnerships are continuing to go strong.

FALL CREEK FIT FISH AND GEIST 5K (Saturday, May 16, 2020) - FCE will be putting together a team in training for the Geist 5k race on Saturday, May 16.  This team of "Fit Fish" will consist of any interested third or fourth grade students at FCE.  We encourage our parents to walk or run with their child on race day.  Practices will begin March 18.  Pick-up time is 4:45 on the South end of the building.  Students may bring water and a healthy snack with them.  Parents do not need to attend the training sessions.  You should have received a Skylert with instructions for signing up.  Registration for the race closes May 2.  Cost is $30/participant.

Science Bowl!
Congratulations to our FCE 4th Grade Science Bowl Team, Mrs. Howard, and Mrs. Vairo - they placed 3rd in the state at the competition this past week.  We are proud of you and appreciate all your hard work!

Learn about the dangers of teen vaping -  Event rescheduled for March 24.

Please Have a Plan in Place
Weather-related delays are possible at any time during the school year.  For students k-4, this simply means that the school day will begin 2 hours later than normal and the buses will pick up 2 hours later than the regular schedule.  Also please send your children with coat, hat and gloves or mittens in this colder weather for recess.  In general, recess will be held indoors if the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees.

Message From the Nurse
Please help our students and staff stay healthy.  A sick student sent home must be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.  Fever-free is a temperature less than 100 without Tylenol or Ibuprofen.  If a student does not stay home for 24 hours once a fever has broken, he/she will be sent home in compliance with HSE policy.  If a student has vomited during the night, even without fever, he/she should not come to school the next morning.

Snack Attack Program:  HSE School District is pleased to announce the return of the Snack Attack program for those students in need.  The program, sponsored by the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, is designed to help students needing a little extra nourishment over the weekend.   Here's how the program works - your child will pick up a small snack sack (granola bar, fruit cup, pop tarts, peanut butter crackers, goldfish crackers - varies each week) on Friday to take home over the weekend.  There is no cost to you or the school.  If you are interested in having your child participate in the Snack Assistance Program, or have questions, please contact the counselor, Mrs. Meyer, mmeyer@hse.k12.in.us.

Book Fees - At this time, all unpaid balances have been sent to TransWorld Collections.   Any questions or if you would like to discuss a payment plan, please contact Rachel Huxford at 317-594-4180 or rhuxford@hse.k12.in.us.
